Stepping Out on the Greens: A Style Guide for New Golfers

You know how to rock the perfect look for power meetings. You've mastered the weekend outfit that's both relaxing and cute. But what about when you're stepping onto the golf course?

Before I started golfing, I imagined golf attire was simple: khakis, a polo, maybe a v-neck sweater. Boring and basic. Surprise! The golf fashion world has exploded with options for every personality and style. The real question is: what's appropriate where?

Know Before You Go

Here's the golden rule: always check the dress code of wherever you're playing or practicing. Golf attire requirements vary widely by course.

Public courses and driving ranges are pretty relaxed. At LA's municipal courses, you'll see everything from classic golf looks to athleisure with sneakers. Jeans or leggings at the range? Sure. Untucked shirts? I've seen those too.

Private clubs? The details matter. At LA Country Club, the list of "no-nos" is long: no denim, no shorts or skorts, no leggings, no hoodies, no athletic tees, no joggers, no capris. Basically, think traditional country club attire.

Many private clubs follow LPGA guidelines: collared shirts (sleeveless collars and mock necks are okay), skirts, skorts, and shorts of appropriate length, and leggings only under skorts or shorts. Most clubs also prohibit metal-spiked shoes.

Where to Shop

If you're just starting out and watching your budget, check out Dick's Sporting Goods, Target's All in Motion, and Old Navy Active for affordable basics that look good on the course.

Ready to level up? Nike Golf, Adidas Golf, Tiger Woods' Sun Day Red, Lululemon, and Athleta offer options with performance fabrics and modern style. For luxury pieces that make a statement, explore Malbon Golf, G/FORE, and Tory Burch Sport.

Want fresh perspectives with modern, fresh design? Eastside Golf is reimagining what golf style looks like with bold aesthetics and cultural authenticity. Brands like Pajaritos Golf Co. and Buena Gente Golf bring cultural pride and unique style to the fairways. I've also been checking out Fore Company's "Rooted in Golf" looks and Trap Golf's "Golf is Dope" caps.

Your First Round

Start with the basics: a collared shirt, golf-appropriate bottoms, and proper shoes. Then build your golf wardrobe as your game grows. Whether you're going preppy at a country club or sporty at the muni, there's a look that's authentically you.

Pro tip: When in doubt, call ahead and ask about the dress code. Nothing kills your golf vibe faster than getting turned away at check-in.

Now get out there and show the greens what you've got. You didn't master the boardroom just to play it safe on the fairway.
